Abstract

This article analyzes the importance of physical conditioning as a fundamental tool for improving health, operational performance, and injury prevention among personnel at the Miguel Ángel Vélez Fire Station of the Loja Fire Department. Given the highly demanding nature of firefighting—characterized by intense exertion, handling of heavy loads, exposure to heat, and emotionally challenging situations—the need for a planned, structured, and sustained training program was identified. The study integrates a theoretical review, an analysis of the state of the art, and the proposal of an intervention model based on physical assessments, cardiovascular training, functional strength training, and continuous monitoring. The findings demonstrate that firefighters with better cardiorespiratory capacity and adequate functional strength exhibit a lower incidence of musculoskeletal injuries and greater tolerance to the thermal and exertional demands inherent in operational activity. Furthermore, regular training contributes to improved metabolic health indicators and promotes emotional stability, a crucial element in professions exposed to traumatic situations. The need for institutional support to ensure the program's sustainability is also highlighted, as is the importance of incorporating self-care strategies and health education into the organizational culture. Taken together, the results lead to the conclusion that a comprehensive physical conditioning program, based on scientific principles and periodic evaluations, is an essential tool for strengthening the safety, well-being, and efficiency of firefighters, ensuring a more robust and resilient response to emergencies.
