Abstract

Stimulant substances have a massive impact on society, negatively influencing serious issues such as social, emotional, and health aspects. This study aimed to identify the consumption of stimulant substances among university students and their knowledge about their effects. A cross-sectional, descriptive, and prospective study was conducted, focusing on first-year nursing students, with a sample of 136 participants. The data was collected through surveys. The results showed that only 4.5% of the students consumed alcoholic beverages, while 38.8% used coffee as their stimulant substance. A remarkable 56.7% of the respondents did not use any stimulant substances. This study reveals that the consumption of illicit substances is relatively low, and the use of substances like marijuana, LSD, and cocaine was not reported in this sample. Those participants who consumed coffee did so primarily to stay alert during their academic studies, as they indicated that this substance is important for improving their academic performance. These findings highlight the need to continue researching and educating university students about the effects of stimulant substances, promoting a healthier approach to studying and overall well-being. Awareness of this issue is essential to promote healthier lifestyle habits among young university students, contributing to a more informed and responsible society in managing these stimulant substances.
