Abstract

In rural areas, heavy machinery operators are exposed to high risks due to limited safety infrastructure and scarce preventive supervision. In this context, the research is guided by the question: How does the implementation of safety protocols for the use of personal protective equipment contribute to reducing occupational risks for heavy machinery operators in rural areas? To address this question, a descriptive and documentary methodology was employed, based on the review of scientific articles, national and international regulations, technical reports, and case studies available in indexed databases. The results show that operators face safety, chemical, and physical risks that require specific preventive measures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The review indicates that an effective PPE protocol should integrate actions such as continuous training, active supervision, and systematic equipment maintenance, in addition to ensuring the availability of certified equipment tailored to the needs of the rural environment. Barriers limiting its application were also identified, including resistance to using PPE, logistical difficulties, lack of training, and a weak preventive culture. It is concluded that the implementation of safety protocols based on the proper use of PPE significantly reduces exposure to risk and strengthens the organizational culture of prevention. It is recommended to promote continuous training programs, improve supervision systems, ensure timely equipment replacement, and foster institutional commitment to guarantee safe and sustainable working conditions.
