This article analyzes the occupational risk factors and preventive strategies in the operational performance of the Fire Department of the Espíndola Canton in Ecuador, with the objective of understanding how working conditions affect the health, safety, and efficiency of its personnel. Through a qualitative methodology based on documentary review and critical analysis of recent literature, ergonomic, psychosocial, legal, and technological risks were identified as directly affecting firefighting tasks in rural contexts. The results show that the lack of adequate equipment, limited systematic training, psychological risks associated with continuous exposure to emergencies, and the absence of stable funding constitute the main challenges faced by the Fire Department of Riobamba. At the same time, opportunities were highlighted regarding inter-institutional cooperation, the adoption of low-cost technological innovations, community participation in prevention, and the need to strengthen organizational culture. The analysis concludes that the future sustainability of the fire department depends on the articulation between public policies, strategic planning, occupational health, and a community-based preventive culture. Furthermore, recommendations are made to improve training, optimize equipment, promote psychological support, consolidate regional cooperation networks, and strengthen institutional knowledge management. In summary, the study provides a comprehensive perspective to understand and address occupational risks in rural fire departments, highlighting the importance of combining innovation, prevention, and cooperation as pillars of institutional sustainability and the well-being of operational personnel.
