The present study focused on reducing operational risks and promoting adequate occupational health for workers in the waste collection system. Employees in this sector face numerous hazards due to insufficient safety measures and constant exposure to risks such as biological, physical, chemical, ergonomic, and psychosocial factors. These conditions increase the likelihood of accidents and occupational diseases among waste collectors. The main objective of this research was to develop a safety protocol tailored to local circumstances, aiming to protect the health and safety of waste collectors in the city of Quevedo. The research methodology involved a comprehensive literature review, which enabled the identification of existing risks and operational best practices to strengthen occupational and hygienic safety for these workers. This approach included risk identification, planning, execution, and evaluation of preventive measures, as well as the incorporation of direct observation, interviews, and collaborative workshops. These strategies allowed for the adaptation of safety measures to the specific environmental conditions faced by workers in Quevedo. As a result, the development of a thorough safety protocol is expected to significantly reduce workplace accidents and health problems. This will be accomplished by requiring the use of personal protective equipment, conducting regular training sessions, providing ergonomic guidelines, and establishing specific procedures for handling hazardous materials. In conclusion, this approach will improve working environments and reinforce local waste management policies, while also recognizing the vital role that waste collectors play within the community. Ultimately, this study contributes to creating safer, healthier workplaces that benefit both workers and society as a whole.
