Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of ergonomic chairs in alleviating low back pain among administrative personnel at the Metropolitan Public Company of Airport Services and Management of Free Zones and Special Regimes in Quito. It acknowledged that prolonged sedentary work, inadequately designed furniture, and a lack of healthy postural habits are significant ergonomic risk factors affecting workers' musculoskeletal health. To address this, an integral strategy is proposed, combining the implementation of adjustable ergonomic chairs, continuous training in postural hygiene, and periodic monitoring of working conditions. The methodology was grounded in a bibliographic review of scientific studies related to ergonomics, occupational low back pain, and interventions within administrative settings. The review encompassed both national and international sources, along with the Ecuadorian regulatory framework for occupational health and safety. Furthermore, empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions was identified for comprehensive analysis. The review's findings indicate that ergonomic chairs, when correctly utilized and meticulously adjusted to individual user characteristics, lead to a notable reduction in the incidence of lumbar discomfort. They also significantly enhance both postural comfort and overall productivity. These crucial measures, when effectively complemented by well- structured and engaging training programs and consistent, diligent follow-up protocols, demonstrably yield a positive and lasting impact on both the physical health and the psychological well-being of the administrative staff. This outcome emphatically underscores the critical importance of integrating ergonomics as a sustained, fundamental organizational policy, fostering a healthier, more comfortable, and ultimately more productive work environment for all employees within the organization.
