Abstract

The Fire Department of Sucua Canton performs important tasks aimed at providing protection and safety to people during various emergencies. As a result, operational personnel are more exposed to work-related stress. This research article proposes strategies to reduce work-related stress among the operational staff of the Fire Department of Sucua Canton. Through a thorough literature review, the primary consequences of work-related stress on emergency response personnel are discussed. It is noted that operational staff work rotating shifts of up to 48 hours, which is strongly associated with a higher risk of developing depression and anxiety, directly affecting their mental and physical health. A qualitative research methodology was applied, based on the analysis of data collected from the Fire Department of Sucua Canton, to determine effective strategies to reduce work-related stress. The findings indicate that work-related stress not only affects individuals but also threatens the proper functioning and overall effectiveness of the entire organization. Among the conclusions, it is emphasized that the lack of strategies to reduce work-related stress can worsen psychological and physical impacts. Therefore, there is an urgent need to implement mental health and occupational wellness policies within the fire department. Such policies would significantly improve the well-being of the staff, leading to better performance, productivity, and efficiency in emergency situations. This research highlights the importance of providing mental health care and proactive measures to ensure the smooth functioning of the institution and the health of its personnel, which will help enhance the overall effectiveness of the fire department.
