This article examined occupational risk factors and the influence of the use of personal protective equipment on the occupational health of the operating personnel of the Municipal Public Company of Drinking Water and Sewerage of Riobamba. For the research, a customized mixed methodology that integrated qualitative and quantitative data was implemented, with the purpose of carrying out a complete analysis of the exposure to risks and the effectiveness level of personal protective equipment in the prevention of occupational diseases. It proved to be evident that, even though it is true that the company has manuals for hydrosanitary works, a few essential fundamental safety parameters in sewage systems are frequently disregarded, which has a direct impact on the health of employees on site. The adequate provision and correct use of personal protective equipment is of the essence and must be complemented by continuous training. The implementation of biosafety practices, which include the use of gloves, masks and eye protection, is imperative for the workers exposed to biological agents. The employer is responsible for providing certified, adequately suited and comfortable personal protective equipment, while the worker is responsible for using the equipment in the correct way and maintaining it in optimal conditions. The continuous investigation and systematic training are proactive tools of utmost relevance for the identification of potential risks, the evaluation of the efficiency of safety measures set in place and the promotion of a culture of prevention in the field of occupational health and safety.
